The Secrets Behind The Superstar

David Bowie was a musical legend, but always managed to remain something of an enigma. Here are five fab facts about the icon himself.

David Bowie may have passed away over three years ago, but his influence lives on. People cover his songs, his image graces art prints, and designers take inspiration from his incredible style. He was a man with a very colourful private life too – and there may be some things that you never knew about him. If you want to know more about the man behind the incredible stage personas, then stay tuned for five incredible facts!

His eyes weren’t a different colour

David Bowie was known for his distinctive eyes – but they weren’t actually a different colour. During a teenage fight with a friend, the conflict resulted in an eye injury, and the pupil of his left eye was left permanently dilated. The best part of this story is that David and his onetime adversary remained friends. Well, he did have him to thank for his most iconic feature!

He was a respected actor too

As well as being a musical icon, David Bowie also had a pretty impressive film career. With almost 30 credits to his name, he was a fairly accomplished actor. His most famous cinematic appearance has to be Labyrinth, which earned him a whole new legion of fans and brought his music to a wider audience. Younger film lovers, of course, may remember his scene-stealing turn in the comedy Zoolander.

He turned down a knighthood

Despite being one of the most trailblazing and inspiring figures in music, David Bowie never sought accolades. He famously turned down a knighthood in 2003, stating that he wasn’t quite sure why he was being offered it in the first place, and that it was never something that he coveted. Never afraid to rock the boat and rebel against the establishment, this showed that he may have been musical royalty but he remained very much down to earth.

He really was a Starman!

David Bowie’s music has something of an interstellar reputation. His hit Space Oddity was played during the BBC coverage of the moon landings. Then decades later, it was covered on board the International Space Station by the Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. Bowie loved Hadfield’s version, and gave it his personal seal of approval. Now, we can’t think of many other musicians whose music travelled quite as far!

His artistic talent was always evident

He may have found incredible success, but David wasn’t so gifted in the classroom. He left school with just one qualification to his name – an O-Level in Art. His passion for creativity stayed with him for the rest of his life, and could be seen both in his personal style and his music. You can pay homage to his love of art in your own home with some David Bowie prints – the perfect purchase for any fan.
