Digg = Flickr for Funny/Interesting/Random Photos

digg-logo.pngSo I used to be a very big fan of Digg.com but recently, and after getting 3-4 accounts banned, I’ve decided I’ve had enough with the site and don’t plan on visiting it regularly anymore. Any website featuring Jeffreymunro.com in the url have been banned from being submitted and no explanation was ever given…. even after multiple e-mails.

My biggest complaint about Digg is that it has become more of a photo and video site as opposed to providing quality technology news. As I am writing this the Top stories are photos of funny bathroom graffiti, a SIMPLE and FAST but extremely FUN flash game (wow, good job with those killer keywords), awesome photos inspired by the game Scrabble (wtf? I don’t even kn0w). If I wanted to look at interesting pictures (keyword there is interesting) I would use either Flickr.com or Stumbleupon a couple of images (usually your best bet). I believed from the beginning that we would eventually see the demise of Digg in the near future and if they end up getting bought out it will most likely mark the end for this once awesome start-up.

If they plan on turning the site around they should begin with adding a photo section along with the video section so that these types of media remain separate from the news and information that most people are looking for and interested in. They should also consider not allowing certain keywords in story titles such as awesome, amazing, the best, wicked, etc…

Someone over at the EZTV release group got adventourous and posted the first seven episodes of season eight of Punk’d with Ashton Kutcher. I’ve never really been a big fan of the Punk’d show but I guess if theres nothing better to watch…. maybe if they changed the host to anyone that is not Ashton Kutcher then I might consider. But wait Ashton Kutcher IS AWESOME.

These torrents are being released before season eight is even aired (props) so there is no plot descriptions out for each episode yet. If you have seen one of the episodes and would like to write a plot description or just who was punkd in the episode that would be great. Just leave it in the comments and I will add it to the post. As soon as I work my way through the episodes I will be posting the list but until then it would be good to provide a temporary list (unless we can get all of them).

Who got punkd ?

Episode 1 - Bucky Lasek, Nelly Furtado and Hayden Panettiere

Free 411 Calls From Goo411

Apr 07, 2007 | No response | 1050 Views

goog411.pngGoogle rolled out another free application into the Google Labs yesterday as they introduced Goo411, their free 411 service. About 2.6 billion 411 calls are made in the U.S. each year, and it is a $7 billion/year market so it makes sense that Google would want to through some ads here and there, offer the service for free, and force companies like Bell and AT&T to offer free alternatives as well.

Goog-411 can be accessed by dialing 1-800-GOOG-411 but from whenever I was trying it I could only get listings in the United States. As it is still in testing I am assuming that once a proper release is made that they will also offer support for Canada. If I am wrong please correct me. Another win-win for Google and its users.

iBook G4 For Sale

ibookg4.jpgI have decided to rid myself of my broken iBook G4 and have placed it up on craigslist. If you are interested in purchasing it for parts, to take it apart, or to attempt a repair (I have no idea what is wrong) then feel free to check the item posting here. All the contact information you need can be found there. My asking price is $100 right now but that is flexible.

UPDATE: Well until today I never realized the power of Craigslist but now I understand. About 30 minutes after I have posted the item I have already received 5 offers and have pretty much closed the deal for well over my asking price.

One of my favorite reality TV shows last night saw battle between the weak all male tribe (well with the exception of one but I suppose she could pass…) against the mixed but stronger moto tribe. I won’t ruin the episode but hers a little preview. The episode begins with 11 survivors waking up to a new day. Alex and Edgardo think they are in a pretty good place aligned with Lisi on the one hand, and on the other with Mookie and Dreamz. Armed with Lisi’s clues Edgardo, Mookie, and Alex look for the idol with Lisi and Dreamz sleeping close by. Mookie was digging at the right place at the right time and located the immunity idol. He now feels that this will secure his place in the tribe and he and Edgardo high five each other. They decided not to tell Lisi because she is unstable and not to tell Dreamz because he might tell Cassandra in a moment of weakness.

I was hoping for Rocky to win but he was voted off last week so I guess I would like to see Yau-man win!! If you watch the show please be sure to leave a comment about who you think should win?

Its about time this movie was available. Denzel Washington plays Doug Carlin, an ATF agent who is called in to recover evidence in the investigation of a New Orleans ferry bombing and experiences a revelation that could allow him to save hundreds of innocent people. Filming in New Orleans, Louisiana was delayed following Hurricane Katrina because of the devastation caused by the storm and the collapse of the Federal levees (see: Effect of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans). Many of the exteriors were set to be shot in New Orleans, including a key sequence involving the Canal Street/Algiers ferry across the Mississippi River. After the city was reopened, the cast and crew returned to New Orleans to continue filming; some scenes of the post-Katrina devastation were worked into the plot.

UOIT University of Ontario

Now this may have little relevance to most of you but I’m hoping this will serve more as a review of the school for students that are looking to go to the school and want a students perspective on how the school is, what it has to offer, and anything else they should know about it. I’m going to try and go into as much detail as I can about my personal experiences at the school and also an overall impression. Some of the things I’m going to talk about include my course (commerce), the buildings, the administration, the mobile computing (laptop) program, events, residence, and whatever else I’m going to come up with as I write this. I would like to hear your feedback if you go to UOIT or plan on coming to this university.

My Program - Commerce
Now sometimes when I tell people that I am in the commerce program they look at me with a blank look on their face then spit out the famous “that’s like business right?”. Yes its like business but it incorporates a very wide range of courses that deal with different aspects of business, economic theory, markets, math in business, building leadership, and making sure your company operates within the limits of the law. My first year gave me a strong understanding of how a business operates in a wide range of markets, how the external world affects the business environment (whole course), and many mathematical approaches to business. If you are looking to start your own business and want to develop a strong business background then commerce is a great direction to head in.

The Buildings
So if you’ve gotten this far then probably know what and where UOIT is but for those of you who are still wondering wtf I am talking about read this, it should clear up some of the questions. Although prepare yourself if you do decide to come to UOIT to receive an endless supply of question either exactly or closely related to the following: ‘UOIT, that’s that new university eh’, ‘Oh, the University of Toronto / Ottawa’, ‘Where is that?’, ‘Never heard of it’, or ‘Is that the one with the college?’. Now back to the buildings… The main buildings used by the university include UA and UB. This is were the majority of your courses will be held unless you are in Eng, god forbid. The university also has courses offered through Trent University and these are usually located in the college buildings. It is weird to describe them as buildings because it makes them sound independent from one another where in fact the university and college is basically one large building with smaller buildings built around it. The library is three stories of quite studying wonderfulness. Its an excellent place to go to get work done because there is little to get distracted with, unless your a book person (wtf?).

The Administration
From my little experience and interaction with the schools administration I would say its always been a good experience with no problems what so ever, they actually found my wallet for me whenever I lost it. Most of your dealings with admin can be dealt with either by e-mail or through their automated systems (tuition payment, course registration etc…). They are quick to reply to e-mail (all under 24hrs for me) and since the university is not as large as others they can take the time to deal with each individual case and make sure a solution has been reached. WebCT is the central hub for information from the university and your primary means of communication with admin, teachers, Ta’s, and other students. Throughout the entire year WebCT has only been down once and this was at the beginning of first semester, easily understood.

Mobile Computing
By being apart of UOIT you also get the luxury of having a laptop with you twenty four hours a day, seven days awake. Sure the thought of lugging a laptop around all the time may seem daunting but after a couple of days it becomes more of a convenience than anything. I couldn’t think of not having a laptop within access at almost anytime. Now whether that is a good thing or not is another question. The school is served with wireless virtually every where you go within the buildings. I have never had the experience of not being able to get a wireless connection somewhere on campus. The tech support are always very helpful and willing to answer any questions you may have. If something breaks they will most often fix it for free but if they do need to get a part for it then they will charge you a fee. The Rollback software has given lots of people troubles this year and they have decided not to include it in next years image which is a huge bonus!! Next year students are lucky that don’t have to deal with that.

Events
E.P Taylor’s is the campus pub and is always holding events during the day and at night all through the week. Check out their website for more information about what is going on. There is all ages nights but they usually suck so if your not 19 be sure to try and arrange a fake i.d otherwise you’ll be stuck for going out.

At the beginning of the year CampusFest plays host to many greats bands including Cardinal Offishall and Hedley (not great at all but anyways…). I haven’t heard any information about CampusFest 07′ but when I do I’ll be sure to let everyone know.

Residence
I lived in South Village for my first year and was happy with it the entire time. The security and front desk won’t bother you unless you are breaking something, making too much noise late at night, or underage. Other than that your free to do pretty much whatever you want. Its a time to be enjoyed. That is all…

Hopefully this will help anyone looking for a little more information about UOIT.
